Games of the Year 2020

Here are my favorite 5 games this year, some honorable mentions are:

Animal Crossing New Horizon - I just completely fell off this game after the first month or 2, and have not felt the urge to go back

Among Us - I only played it a few times this year, but I had a great time each time. Very exciting to see games from small teams blow up like Among Us and Fall Guys did this year.

Spiritfarer - Only barely got bumped off the list, a really great game that I put a lot of time into this year.

5. Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2 - These are remakes from at least 3 years ago of games that came out at least 15 years ago, but for me they were new in 2020. The Yakuza games are equal parts silly romps, heartwarming tales, and gritty crime dramas. I’m very excited to play the rest of them now that they’ve been announced for game pass in 2021 (don’t tell Sega, I would’ve bought them after I had such a good time with the first 3).

4. Spider-Man: Miles Morales - I think I liked the original PS4 Spider-Man a little more, but swinging around NYC as Spider-Man is still a blast. Miles Morales is definitely a shorter game than its predecessor, I was surprised to find myself wanting more when I was finished with the game, Spider-Man was the first game I got the platinum trophy in.

3. Star Wars Squadrons - I really like Star Wars, and dogfighting games. The story in Squadrons was fine, but the multiplayer has kept me coming back since it came out. The Star Wars factor is has a lot to do with how much I like this game. But I do think the game holds up well enough

2. Hades - Lots of works have been written about how good Hades is, and many more will be written still. Hades’ ability to tell a compelling story not only in a run-based game, but because it’s a run-based game. The combat is good, all the weapons are fun and unique. The sheer amount of writing in this game is staggering, the fact that it is also well written and mostly voiced is basically just showing off.

1. Hearthstone Battlegrounds - Not a new game, but easily the game I played the most in 2020 than Battlegrounds, Hearthstone’s auto-battler.
